Get the facts

What is considered appropriate/inappropriate behaviour in a classroom?

In classrooms, teachers usually want you to look at them, listen to them and think about what they are saying.

  • Sometimes they will ask you to do group or paired work and the rules might be different at these times.

In the classroom there are times when it is ok to have a joke and a laugh with the teacher but at other times the teacher may be cross if you are joking and laughing.

  • A good rule of thumb is to look at other students and see what they are doing; if no-one else is laughing it is likely that you should not be laughing either.

As far as other students are concerned it is usually safest to have no physical contact with them.

  • You might only be messing around but you may be stronger than you think and the other student may really get hurt, or an adult may think you are being too rough or deliberately hurting someone.

Another thing to consider is that you should not touch any part of another person’s body that is considered private.

  • Private areas are those that are normally covered by a person’s underwear. In most social situations people would become upset or offended and maybe even angry if you were to touch them in these areas.
