A new resource to help parents of children on the autism spectrum choose the right school for their child has now been translated into eight different languages. Produced by the Autism Education Trust (AET), this informative booklet can be used by teaching staff as a resource for parents whose first language is not English. Just belonging to a minority ethnic community in addition to being on the autism spectrum could mean that some children face double discrimination while accessing services.
The booklet has been translated into Urdu, Arabic, Classical Chinese, French, Somali, Polish, Tamil, Bengali (recorded in audio format) and Punjabi (also recorded in audio format). It sets out the different options for parents in terms of the types of schools available, the questions to ask, how to cope with the transition from primary to secondary and contacts to advice and further information.
This leaflet is part of the Reaching Out Toolkit, created by the AET for teachers and other education workforce professionals, providing background information about difficulties faced by some of the families, good practice guidelines and links to resources in other languages.
