High ambitions, a unique curriculum and highly trained staff are essential factors in providing good autism education, according to a report commissioned by the Autism Education Trust (AET). The report, entitled What is Good Practice in Autism Education? also highlights the need for teachers to work together to share knowledge with specialist schools and services.

Commissioned by the Autism Education Trust (AET) and written by Professor Tony Charman and a team at the Institute of Education (IOE), the report identifies the key themes and recommended practices which all schools can adopt to improve their education practice for pupils on the autism spectrum. It also gives schools an immediate blueprint for ‘good practice’ in autism education.

The report outlines the best features of 16 schools ranked "outstanding" by Ofsted, based on in-depth interviews with staff, pupils and parents. Several consistent themes came out across the schools surveyed, including high aspirations for pupils with autism and taking time to listen to their feedback. They also recognised the need for an "autism curriculum" to address the social, emotional and communication needs of children with autism.
