The Government’s long-awaited SEN Green Paper is expected to be published early this year and a summary of the consultation that closed in October 2010 has now been published.
Nearly 2,000 people responded to the Government Green Paper consultation ‘Call for Views’, 40 per cent of who were parents or carers. These responses will help inform the Green Paper, and a summary has been published on the Department for Education’s consultation site here.
Some of the key themes identified in the responses include:
- The importance of identifying children’s needs as early as possible.
- Ensuring SEN and disability training is improved for teachers and practitioners and that more resources are available to support children’s needs.
- The importance of more joined up approaches between required agencies and professionals.
- Increased parental and child involvement in choosing educational provision and planning for transition.
The Green Paper is expected to be published in February 2011.
