Keeping clean is essential to staying healthy. Poor personal hygiene can cause skin complaints, unpleasant smells and/or infections.
Children and young people with autism can have sensory difficulties that make it hard for them to keep clean. For example, they may not like the feeling of water or soap on their skin, the sound of the shower, or even the feeling of clean clothes.
It’s important to try and understand what it is that a person finds difficult. Break things down and discuss with that person what the best way to tackle it is.
