"This was incredibly helpful to complete as a class team... It helped us to identify the triggers of the behaviour which we were unable to do when observing in isolation."

Tool 5 - STAR Chart

The STAR chart is one way of understanding the individual by recording and analysing incidences of distressed behaviours. This can be helpful in identifying patterns that may cause distress and help you to plan for adjustments and support strategies.

This Tool will help you to:

  1. Record detailed observations of when incidences of concerning behaviour occur
  2. Gather information to recognise patterns in behaviour and develop an understanding of the cause/trigger
  3. Implement a behaviour strategy to reduce a behaviour whilst still maintaining the same outcomes the behaviour is attempting to achieve
